Segway Ninebot ES2 Review

The electric scooter market has been boosting up in the last year as the adoption of transportation increases worldwide. Ninebot, now introduces the ES2 electric scooter, a follow-up to their very successful ES1. Mixing clean design, solid tires, suspension, and modular battery expansion with Segway technology, it promises to be a great scooter in the market with such immaculate features.

The Ninebot-Segway ES2 is a foldable electric bike structured by Segway, the notable American organization that was purchased by Chinese firm Ninebot in 2015. The ES2 has a basic collapsing structure, 25 km (16 miles) extend, 25 km/h (16 mph) maximum velocity, 12.5 kg weight, and front and back suspension. The additional battery stretches out the range to 45 km (28 miles) and the maximum velocity to 30 km/h (19 mph).

Segway Ninebot ES2 electric Kick Scooter highlights a LED show, Bluetooth abilities, voyage control, adjustable surrounding light hues, a versatile APP network for extra security, firmware updates and that’s just the beginning.

Segway Ninebot ES2 Detailed Review

Segway Ninebot ES2 Electric Kick Scooter

A Long-Range Scooter

Segway ES2 has 25 km (15.5m) distance when riding in perfect conditions. This is a fairly standard distance a lightweight electric scooter can cover considering other options on the market. But what makes it exceptional is the extra battery upgrade option available with the Segway ES4. With the battery upgrade and perfect riding conditions, you should be able to reach 45 km (28 miles) distance.

This makes the scooter stand out against others in the market and makes a huge difference for people commuting long distances in the city that don’t have a chance to charge their electric scooter in the school or office. We think it’s the best electric scooter for long commutes.

Durable construction and Compactness

The scooter is made from hard aluminum alloy making quite lightweight, just 12.5 kg (25 lbs). There are some plastic parts like wheel covers, rear foot brake, and control pedals. No doubt that it is made from durable material with such a compact design and folding mechanism. Its durable construction keeps the scooter intact even after many years of the purchase of this scooter.

Furthermore, the folding hinge is located at the front of the deck instead of on the upright steerer tube. This is great for steering feel, reducing the flex down the handlebars, and also negates the use of a kickstand when folded since the base ends up securely on the floor. It’s a novel collapsing mechanism, requiring you to flip down a latch and then kick down on it to fold the scooter down. This folding mechanism makes it a compact scooter that can be taken to any place by just folding it.

Appearance

This is by far the best-looking scooter that we currently offer. It’s a sleek, cohesive design, oozing a level of quality that the competitors fail to match. Lots of work has gone into ensuring the scooters have a minimalist feel, with only one wire visible, poking out aside the hinge.  It truly feels like a premium product, something that even some higher-priced scooters fall short on.

Segway ES2 comes in black and silver colors. Both color combinations are gender-neutral and so suitable for all ages and genders. Ninebot by Segway has also put LED lights underneath the Segway ES2 scooter that illuminates the ground with different colors. A nice feature to make the scooter look “funky” and more eye-catching.

Speed Modes and its Maximum Speed

Since it is an upgraded model of ES1 so likely Segway ES2 has 3-speed modes. The first speed mode is limit speed mode, meaning you can set your speed limit with your smartphone through the Ninebot smartphone app which is available on iOS and Android. We like this mode since you can customize a lower speed in case of high people traffic, cars on your path, or for younger riders. The second is the normal speed mode which gets you to max speed, and the third speed mode is sports mode that again goes to max speed but with more power and greater acceleration.

Comparing to other lightweight electric scooters on the market Segway ES2 sits around the middle with a max speed of 25 km/h (15.5 m/h). The max speed is enough for commuting in the city, and whilst it’s not the fastest electric scooter available, it comes packed with other features.

Charging time and Battery Backup

The Segway ES2 has a relatively short charging time of 3.5 hours to go from 0% to 100%. One of the fastest charging times we have seen on electric scooters in this bracket. If you opt for the ES4, it will take you 7 hours to charge both batteries. As almost all electric scooters in the industry Ninebot by Segway uses high-quality Lithium-Ion batteries which should comfortably last 500-1000 charge cycles which are approx. 2-3 years of regular use.

Safety control by SEGWAY is one of the advanced features, it offers. Ninebot by Segway make sure to implement safety control on all their products. Just like Segway ES1, the ES2 and ES4 models have general battery safety controls:

  • Over-heating protection
  • Short circuit protection
  • Over-current protection
  • Over-charge protection

Weight, it can bear

Ninebot by Segway suggests that the minimum age for riding their electric scooter is 14 years. Compared to electric scooters designed primarily for children, it is on the fast side, even with the lower speed settings. It’s a great option for teenagers, so we feel their age restriction is fair.

The max rider weight is not very impressive at just 100 kg (220 lbs). We have tested the scooter with multiple testers and heavier testers were still happy with the scooter since its powerful motor didn’t result in a huge drop in acceleration or max speed, but it took longer to reach max speed.

Ride Quality

We enjoyed riding the ES2. To check the ride quality such scooters are tested on hard paths and on those it was comfortable and smooth to ride, only jittering on cobbled surfaces. The power delivery was smooth and although we used cruise control for longer journeys, the resistance on the throttle was never fatiguing in extended use. It was comfortable to carry upstairs and felt svelte when loading in and out of the car, whereas other scooters have felt cumbersome.

Specifications and Strength

Since this scooter is equipped with really great specifications which not only distinguished this scooters from other scooter but also make it one of the best scooter. They can be enlisted as

  • Bluetooth enabled scooter with a mobile application for updates and real-time as well as historical data.
  • An easy foot-folding mechanism that folds it together into a lightweight and compact scooter package.
  • A good light system with the rear light, headlight, and lights underneath the footpad.
  • The ability to upgrade to an ES4 with the add-on battery that attaches to the handlebar.
  • The motor and footbrake works great and lets you stop in time.
  • The design is very stylish and well thought through.

Safety

Like all the other Ninebot e-scooters, the Ninebot ES2 offers you outstanding safety. Its battery is designed to prevent problems like short circuits, over-current, over-charging, and over-heating. But that’s not all! You can enjoy riding your Ninebot ES2 in all types of terrain. No need to stick to paved roads because this e-scooter can drive on rough surfaces and even speed bumps.

Anti-slip rubber tires allow feeling safe if you step on it with wet footwear. Segway ES2 does not only have front LED lights but also rear and side red LED lights instead of reflectors to make you more visible in the night. The front electric brake and the rear manual brake will provide safe braking even if you use the Segway ES2 as a regular kick-scooter. With the electric brake, you should stop within 4 meters distance.

Value for money

I think that when you are about to purchase this scooter for your kid then just consider in your mind that you are about to buy a scooter from a company that has manufactured around 13 million scooters which are a huge number. I think this numeric figure is enough to build your confidence that your investment is not going in vain.

No doubt, this scooter is a little bit pricey but if you look towards the features which come with it out of the box then you will consider it as a scooter that values for your money.

Conclusion

The Ninebot ES2 mixes a comfortable, stable ride with excellent build quality. If you want to ride along glass/nail filled routes then the airless tires will be perfect for you, although we felt they offered less grip than the soft, pneumatic ones found on competitors. The dashboard showing your charge level and speed are welcome and the companion app is well polished and reliable in use. Overall it cannot be considered as the only best option to buy as ES2 has hard tires which doesn’t make your ride too much comfortable if you consider this scooter for a longer run.
